Town Hall Meeting – April 6
Riverfront Community Center, Leavenworth

Our April Town Hall meeting was held at the Riverfront Community Center. Attendance was 52.

Dave Trabert of the Flint Hills Policy Center spoke on Proposition K: A Better Property Tax System for Kansas. The Flint Hills Policy Center recently published a study that proposes replacing the appraisal system on real estate, resulting in taxes being more predictable and making the government budgeting process more transparent. The discussion was both interesting, enlightening and even controversial at times.

Ross Markle, an appointed member of the Kansas Highway Advisory Commission, representing District 1, spoke on Transportation issues affecting Leavenworth County and the allocations of available funds throughout the county area.

Town Hall Meeting - May 4
Riverfront Community Center, Leavenworth

The Town Hall meeting for May was held on Monday evening, May 4, from 7:00 -9:00 pm. The meeting was held at the Riverfront Community Center in Leavenworth.

Our guest speaker for the May 4 meeting was Stephen Ware, Professor of Law, University of Kansas. Professor Ware discussed how the Most Important Judges in Kansas are selected: Selection to the Kansas Supreme Court.

Kansas is the only state in the union that selects judges the way we presently do. The current system gives the members of the bar majority control over the selection of the state Supreme Court justices. A good turnout was on hand to listen to Professor Ware. Attendance was 42.

Following this presentation Connie O’Brien provided an update on issues from the State House as they were wrapping up the legislative actions.

The Republican Women’s Organization hosted a Salads, Stimulants and Deserts (fund-raising project) prior to the start of the meeting. The food was fantastic and enjoyed by all.
